With the announcement of Fear Effect and Secret of Mana remakes, it’s evident that one of Square Enix’s goals is to re-release their blockbuster games from the past to a new generation of gamers. While their games before were big hits back then, it’s totally reasonable for them to do this as it will give new generation gamers a chance to play them and experience them with upgraded visuals.
Square Enix has a vast library of games that most likely will receive a remake. We have seen several games that received a remaster already like the older Final Fantasy titles from the PS2 era, and now Fear Effect and Secret of Mana are getting total remakes. With many games in their library, here are the games that Square Enix should definitely consider remaking or remastering:
Square Enix released the first Valkyrie Profile on the PS One and later received a sequel on PS2 several years later. Between the two, the first game was received pretty well due to its epic story and gameplay it had back then. It will be great for Square Enix to do a total remake on this one as there are some elements in its gameplay that will be a total hit. Today’s generation will love the deep connection to the 24 playable characters that Lenneth can recruit, and of course a story between the Valkyrie and Asgard.
When Parasite Eve was first launched, it was received quite well and was considered competition to Capcom’s Resident Evil. With its success, the game received a sequel, though it wasn’t as good as the first one. Later on the PSP days, the game received its follow-up title but luckily, it was somewhat good. If Square Enix would remake a Parasite Eve title, it would be best if they do the first one as it has all of the things a survival-horror had back then. It’s not all about Zombies like Resident Evil, but it has monsters, and a story that will surely scare the new generation of gamers today.
Up until now, the Xeno games continue to propser as we still receive games from the Xeno-brand like with the upcoming Xenoblade Chronicles 2 for the Nintendo Switch. To commemorate the release of Xenoblade Chronicles 2 this Holiday 2017, it will be awesome if Square Enix or Monolith Software at least try to remake or remaster Xenogears. With its heavy text, it will be great if the remake would at least have voice overs, and of course maybe a slight touch-up to the battle system.
One of the great JRPGs that Square Enix published back then was the Grandia series. Its battle system was its main highlight as it was a mix of real time and turn-based. The story was quite good as well, especially Grandia III. Out of all the Grandia games that Square Enix published, it will be awesome if we get some sort of a remaster to Grandia III, similar to what they did with Final Fantasy X/X-2. With so many great JRPGs back then that definitely need some new life this generation, Grandia III should be on the top of the list to get remade.
Brave Fencer Musashi
One of the memorable action-RPG games that Square Enix developed back in the 1990s is Brave Fencer Musashi. Back then, the game received a positive critical response where critics praised the graphics in comparison to other similar titles of the time. Gameplay was also found to be compelling, especially the action elements, not to mention the story was quite good as well. Musashi received a sequel in 2005 for PS2 but it wasn’t as good as the first one. An overhaul of graphics for Brave Fencer Musashi will be a great idea for Square Enix and for sure, a lot of gamers back then will be pleased to see Musashi once again in glorious HD or even 4K.
